R&R: Romans and Racing

2006 Lamborghini Diablo ~ 500+ Horsepower
For as long as I can remember I have been way into cars, especially fast cars. I had an amazing experience driving a 2006 Lamborghini Diablo on a closed course over this last summer. The thrill of the race itself is a very unique and exhilarating experience. Did the romans ever experience or seek after thrills similar to these?

Although they didn't have "500 horses" pushing them around a track, the Romans had a passion for horse and chariot racing. Although most of these races were borrowed from the Greek institutions of them, the Romans really perfected and advanced chariot racing into what is seen in most modern movies today.
Depiction of a very eventful chariot race

  1. Excellent way to connect the topic to yourself! Also, interesting comment about the "500 horses." I do wonder if these numbers are, or ever were accurate in gauging power. It seems a bit of a issue due to the fact that there are so many different breeds of horses, each with their own unique pros and cons. Going past that, however, horses today are probably much more well-bred and trained with all of the innovations of modern society. I wonder how all of these things compare... That's beside the point though. This was an interesting method of connecting the ancient Romans to yourself. Good job!

  2. Hmmm great comment Thomas. I am an actuarial science major and I liked the questions you have posed about how horsepower is actually measured, given that there are so many different types of horses out there. I'll look into that for sure.
