Touchdown!

Last week I got to go help clean up the stadium after the football game.  I wondered why it had to be soooo big. Then, as if Zeus had struck me with his thunderbolt, I realized that I could blame the Romans for having to stay up late.  Modern day football stadiums, and many other sport stadiums for that matter, are patterned after the amphitheaters of ancient Rome.

The stadium seems to be perfectly suited for packing people in and raising excitement levels.  Maybe it's the aerial perspective one gets, or the shirtless man next to you.  Perhaps its "the wave."  I can see the Romans doing that.

  1. My roommate last year would have to clean the stadium after games with her ROTC squad! She did mention that you really don't know how big the stadium is until you have to clean it. Great connection!

  2. Haha, I could totally see them doing the wave. I also appreciated the reference to Zeus, it was a great topic referencing the supernatural and a mighty simile. I do wonder where sports would be today without the coliseum, would they be as big as they are? Would they be the same shape? And since the sport itself needed to fit in the stadium, have they shaped the rules regarding our own modern day sports?
