Figurative Script about Scriptures

Tropes about Scripture Study

  • Metaphor:
    • "Scriptures are food for thought."
    • The scriptures are obviously not fine dining . But I do enjoy the deeper scriptural meaning that this metaphor offers because we are told to "feast upon the words of Christ" (2 Nephi 32:3), so scriptures as food is a commonly used comparison.
  • Paranomasia:
    • "Every member must remember to read the scriptures daily."
    • Church members might laugh at this play on words, but hopefully it's catchy enough to make them commit it to memory.
  • Anthimeria:
    • "I know that scripturing throughout my day keeps me focused on Christ."
    • Turning the noun "scriptures" into a verb spices up the sentence, instead of repeating the age-old "studying the scriptures" phrase again.
  • Hyperbole:
    • "Your life will change completely the very moment that you open the scriptures."
    • This may be true for some people...But for most it is an exaggeration, if not an inspiring one.
  • Oxymoron:
    • "You might consider listening to the scriptures as books on tape in your car!"
    • Book on tape is an oxymoron because a book is a book and tape is tape and they are opposing mediums. It's used as a serious comment, though, not necessarily meant to add humor.
Schemes about the Study of the Scriptures:

  • Parallelism:
    • "Whether the writings are from ancient prophets in the Old Testament, American prophets in the Book of Mormon, or modern prophets in the Doctrine and Covenants, they are all considered the words of God."
    • By paralleling different prophets from different volumes of cannon I emphasized the fact that their writings are equally important messages from God.
  • Anastrophe:
    • "Happy you will be when you study daily."
    • This has a better ring to it than, "You will be happy when you study daily."
  • Ellipsis:
    • "A good study session consists of reading, but an excellent of feasting."
    • Members who know the 2 Nephi 32:3 reference will be prompted to rethink the difference between simply skimming the scriptures and really relishing them, thanks to this ellipsis which omitted the words "study session consists of" in the second clause.
  • Alliteration:
    • "Scripture study serves as a source of spiritual serenity, especially when performed in solitude."
    • Repeating the "s" sound so much sets a peaceful tone that encourages the audience to seek that spiritual silence.

  1. Yummmm. Reading your post made me hungry, and with that I mean both physically and spiritually. Your examples were interesting and accurate, which made for an entertaining read. I would think in the anastrophe it would be a little more effective if you added something more vivid in the sentence to improve the emphasis on the joy and spiritual tranquility received from personal scripture study. Just, food for thought. ;)
