"Figurative Language about Drumming"

Tropes about drumming:

1. metaphor:
- “A drumstick is a drummer’s drug.”
- A drumstick obviously is no kind of drug but it is used metaphorically because it suggests that it does wonders for a drummer.

2. paronomasia:
- “Don’t be dumb and just hit the drum.”
- Both “dumb” and “drum” sound the same and it is a play on words due to the fact that if one isn’t dumb, they will be smart and drum.

3. anthimeria:
- “Drum until you are relaxed and drummed out.”
- This is an example of anthimeria because one can obviously not be “drummed out”. They can be tired or done, however “drummed out” isn’t a real phrase.

4. hyperbole:
- “I just hit the drum a million times in thirty seconds.”
- Obviously I didn’t reach a tempo to where i could beat the drum over a million times in thirty seconds. It’s a huge exaggeration.

5. oxymoron:
- “Good drummers make difficult drumming easy.”
- “Difficult” and “easy” are both utilized in this sentence which is an oxymoron because drumming can’t be both difficult and easy simultaneously. Although it does depend on the drummer and his skills, most are in agreement if a piece of music is difficult.

Schemes about drumming:

1. parallelism:
- “A drum is an extremely loud instrument and a beautiful piece of equipment.”
- We could line these up visually, like discussed in class, where “extremely loud instrument” would be above “beautiful piece of equipment.”

2. anastrophe:
- “Oh how breath taking and innovative that drum visual was.”
- Normally the sentence would be worded with “that drum visual was breath taking” at the end of the sentence.

3. ellipsis:
- “Jason has extremely quick hands and Beatrice doesn’t.”
- The use of “quick hands” has been omitted when describing Beatrice’s ability to drum.

4. alliteration:
- “ Drumming is really so ridiculously relaxing that it really rests our minds.”
        - The alliteration is utilized through the heavy use of the letter “R” in the sentence.

  1. Your choice to alliterate the "R" is great because it sounds like drumrrrrrrroll!

  2. I like how your paronomasia included drum as one of the words that was similar in the sentence, great play on words!
