Humanity in Human Interactions

While preparing for our last post, I had two interactions online: one on a traditionally "social" medium--Twitter, and the other on a more anonymous site--Reddit.

There was a distinct difference in the quality of ideas exchanged, and I believe much of this had to do with the responsibility that comes with attaching your name to posts.

Social Tribalism

We need to change the way we interact with others outside of groups that we identify with, and even change fundamentally what it means to belong to a group. Social tribalism is becoming a problem in society.

I have to hang my head in shame - I'm a few seconds over.... Whoops.

Also - I really wanted to work a clip from this into the video, but it didn't make it. Enjoy Disney's take on the problem of tribalism.

All I do is work, work, work

American's are known for working hard. But if you ask me, we've gone off the deep end with the idea! Why? We rarely work out of necessity anymore but work because we want more stuff, more power, and more prestige. American's take fewer days off then most countries out there and many American's do it because they are trying to keep up with the Jones'. Though working is important, all of this stuff isn't going to mean anything if we don't take the time to enjoy it! So maybe it's time we step out of the office for awhile and use those vacations so we can once again realize how we need to enjoy the time we have because memories are the only thing we'll take with us.

Seniority rules . . . should change

I've been looking at seniority in school districts. In my previous posts, I discuss in more detail the issues surrounding this dogma. I tried to summarize the main points in this video.

Nonprofit Overhead

I am advocating for a different view of nonprofit overhead. I don't think overhead ratios should be used to determine whether or not a nonprofit is successful because it misses the larger picture. People can see exactly what a nonprofit does by looking through their website and digging a little deeper. Don't avoid giving funds to a nonprofit just because they spend extra on the salary of a needed employee. If they are doing good in the world then they are worth donating to. (Sorry for talking so slow, I have been talking to my two-year-old nephew and it spilled over into regular conversation)
