My family and I lived in Japan for a few years while I was in high school. The architecture there was amazing! The utility of all of the ancient temples and homes was amazingly advanced, but were very elegant and intricate. Similarly, ancient Greeks sought to make beautiful edifices that reflected their refined culture. Isn't cool how you can look at the two different buildings above and tell me almost exactly from what area of the world and culture they come from? Architecture historically was such a defining characteristic of a civilizations culture.

That's so interesting to compare the architecture of ancient Greece to a completely different culture that I am not familiar with. It's fun to look and feel the power that comes just from a well designed building. My uncle is an architecture so I've seen a lot of beautiful buildings that he has designed but it seems that usually we end up seeing imitations of ancient Greek architecture like the White House.
ReplyDeleteI took a an interior design class last year and we spent part of our time in class studying Greek architecture. It amazes me how they were able to build extraordinary buildings with no use of modern technology that allows us to make buildings that replicate their designs.
ReplyDeleteI totally see what you were talking about in your comment on my post. On the surface these buildings have many similarities but they are obviously from different recognizable cultures. In that way architecture definitely is an art form and way of expression.
