The Triangle

So I found this triangle outside the Clyde Building with Greek words all over it. Tau Beta Pi.  It is a secret society that glorifies those who excel in math and engineering.  Maybe it's not that secret.  Anyways, I thought it interesting how much influence the Greek alphabet has on different organizations. Each letter has its own history and meaning.

Tau (τ) - cross
Beta (β) - house
Pi (π) - gate

Question: If you put these letters together, what new meaning does this society take on?

  1. Each letter has its own history? That is pretty cool. We often think about the origin of words (or at least I do); for example, who decided that a dog should be called a dog or that adding an "-ed" at the end of a verb would make it past tense? But I have never wondered about the history of letters. Thanks for the interesting insight!

  2. How did you research this? Does anyone know why so many educational institution represent themselves with Greek letters? I guess I've never thought about it.
