♫ I will work, and I will pray... ♪

"The ancient Greeks considered work a galling distraction from the more sublime pursuits of the mind—a view that allowed them to justify slavery so that the elite class could focus on thinking great thoughts..." What Is Your Calling in Life? Jeffery A. Thompson

A difference between myself and the Greeks: I believe in a balance of both prayer/meditation/higher thought/study and also hard work.  Here I am about to thrust in my sickle to harvest some rice with members and investigators in Thailand, just hours after morning scripture study.

  1. It's so intriguing to see where our society differs from Grecian society because we think we have become who we are because of the Greeks when in reality, we do have different values.

  2. That's true, Katie. Prof. Burton has lamented that our own democracy was based off of the Greeks', which was based off of slavery. But don't we believe in just the opposite? Individual, hard labor is the American dream…isn't it?

  3. I love working! It's really weird but I find a lot of relief from stress and just feel better when I work hard. I agree with you that there needs to be a balance, but without work I really don't think that I personally would get anywhere good in life... but then again maybe the Greeks had a different perception of what work really is, I consider studying a type of work, perhaps they thought that to be one of the "higher pursuits".
