Out of all the many different influences the Ancient Greek culture has on our modern lives, the two I see most in my life (aka the two I had pictures of so I wouldn't have to worry about copyright infringements) are architecture and storytelling. I am amazed by how many buildings are built with Greek influences. I mean, any time you see a pillar the design was probably copied off of a Greek building. I found a website (
pillars) that shows three different types of pillars that the Greeks used based on how ornate they wanted a building to be. Anyway, for storytelling I like to read and tell stories but I also like to participate in plays and drama productions. So apparently there is more Greek in me than I thought!
Great point Courtney. Its weird to think that so many parts of what we see around us daily actually has come that ancient Greek civilization. They're everywhere! Architecture, music, media, government... Those greeks sure do get around.
ReplyDeleteYou have a great costume on right there, and your post inspired me to search and read about Greek Costume and Mask ( http://greektheatre.wordpress.com/home/ ). I wonder if they ever dressed up for any events besides performing. You could wear that outfit again for Halloween!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! My whole post is about architecture. I was actually an architecture major at the U before my mission and so much of what we observed and talked about in my architecture classes were drawn back to the ancient Greeks. What is really cool is when today influences from ancient Greece meet influences from ancient Asia and other areas that were very advanced anciently. In my post you can kind of see by comparing the two pictures that there are some similarities in a building from Japan and a building from Ancient Greece.
