The Opposite Goes With Me Just Fine

The second world war was a terrible time but a defining time for my grandfather. My grandfather was a bomber pilot in World War II. He didn't talk much about those years much but I know it was something that did define the kind of person that he was.
One of those defining characteristics is his smile... or lack thereof. It is something that just kind of stuck with my grandfather was the stern military look. Most of the pictures that we have today are of my happy smiling grandmother and my stern faced looking grandfather. It has been the source of many jokes in my family today.  My grandfather and mother originally started in New Mexico but later, because of the military, moved to Arizona. Today they are still living there.
This is where my parents, and where I, grew up. My parents still live in Arizona and that may be the only thing that is the same between my parents and my Grandparents. Keeping to the tradition of opposites my family today will try to smile and show our happy faces whenever we can. That’s the exact opposite of my grandfather’s look. Also my dad is almost against technology. The dishwasher is the bane of his existence, its all about hand washing. Maybe that’s why I am going into the IT major and loving every minute of it. Hey have to keep to the tradition of opposites right?

  1. A "tradition of opposites", I've never heard that before! So often we look for traditions in terms of what stays the same. I like that you focused on a tradition of change. It's a cool perspective.

  2. I wonder if and how this "tradition of opposites" has played a role in shaping the more distant past and history that we know.Although you referenced it in more of a joking manner I wouldn't be surprised if throughout history religious and national leaders or nations continued to do the opposite of the leader before to help boost their political appeal for example.
