When people think of bodyguards of the first LDS Church president, Joseph Smith, the first name that comes to mind is Porter Rockwell. Not as well known is the Kentucky native, Hosea Stout. My great great great great grandfather found and embraced the LDS religion at a young age in Missouri. Not only did he serve as the prophet's bodyguard but was involved in the Black Hawk War, was an officer in the Nauvoo Legion, and was chief of police. When the Mormons moved to Utah, he became a member of the Utah Legislature and also of the City Council in Salt Lake City. At age 43 he left home to serve as a missionary in Hong Kong, China. Sadly, his wife Louisa Taylor Stout died after childbirth. She is the wife that I descend from. He later had several other wives, including a young woman named Alvira Wilson with whom he had 11 children.
Having a direct ancestor that personally knew a prominent figure, such as Joseph Smith, helps me feel closer to past stories that I have only heard. Small details that are generally overlooked jump out and give more insight into who they were and not just what they may have done, especially when reading their own words in journals. Hosea, for me, is a personal historical link to my religious beliefs.
I think that is really cool that you have such a close connection to Joseph Smith. I don't have Mormon ancestors that date very far back, no Mormon heritage, so I think it is really neat to hear how your personal family history has linked you closer to the gospel and its prominent figures. This is a great example of how doing your genealogy pays off!
ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard of the Black Hawk war until I read this post. I actually just finished reading the Wikipedia article on the war and its fascinating. Apparently Hosea first heard about the church during the war. What a cool connection to have! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat an intriguing story. It is so fascinating to look back in history and find out more about the wonderful lives of our ancestors. That is a great story that you will be able to share with you future children and grandchildren.
