When Did Consumerism Overrule Democracy?

So much happened during the renaissance,
Any ideas how it can relate to Voting?

Voting

Renaissance-
??? Anyone have an idea?

Enlightenment-
The French and American revolutions were fought because the people wanted to have a say in what the government does to them.

Industrialization-
Marx thought that capitalism failed, and thus the government would need to take the power away from the people. Take power away from the people means taking away their vote.

1800’s-
Poll taxes were introduced to prevent poor people (mostly the recently freed slaves) from voting.

WWI-
Women were given the right to vote after showing how much they could help during the war.

Early Modern-
Calvin Coolidge said that an americans importance to his country is not as a citizen but as a consumer.

Modern-
Consumerism swells while the percentage of registered voters who vote abates.

  1. You seem to have a lot of great points from many different periods to support your idea.

  2. This assignment was interesting. I found that it helps get back further to the root of our problems that we are calling for change. Helps us realize how this issue crept up throughout different periods of time and formed how it is today. Great examples of your issue throughout the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.

  3. Your ties into history are good. What makes the history of this issue so important in light of your call for online voting? I guess that might be kinda obvious, but it might help to see that connection more fully. I think it would help in your presentation, too, if you talked about online voting throughout the whole thing instead of just at the end. I need to work on that in mine, too--getting to the point and then adding onto it and supporting it instead of leaving it til the end.
