As my students have been studying rhetoric and the history of civilization, they have also been using rhetoric to analyze their intended career fields. Now, their task is to connect their field to history. The world of work is tied tightly to the present, but the perspective of the past can provide meaningful contexts for succeeding in the present.
Assignment (Due Wednesday, Dec 3, 10pm):
Students are to research their career field in terms of 1) the recent past; and 2) the distant past (antiquity through the middle ages). They are to find one source for each of these. For the recent past, this source can be an interview with someone experienced in the field; for the distant past, this must be a scholarly source and it should go back in time to the period from antiquity to the middle ages (if possible), and especially to Greek or Roman culture or to early Christianity or medieval Catholicism. Both sources should be documented in the appropriate citation style for that field (MLA, APA, etc.).
With this information, they are to create a blog post of 400-500 words directed to a general audience that synthesizes their research and presents an understandable context for their career field for a general audience.
As part of the assignment, each student is to make comments and ask clarifying questions to at least two other students' posts for this assignment.
